I hope you know the difference between indirect and reported speech. So, I'll just explain for both and school textbook tends to get mixed up with them.
For indirect speech, usually, it's just to make the imperative sentence sound more polite, while for reported speech, it's for reporting what other people say.
Example:- 'Get down now, kid!!'
- 'Please don't touch it!'
Indirect speech: - I'd be grateful if you can get down now, kid.
- It would be better if you not touch it.
In this case you just add some polite phrase at the beginning like 'I wonder...;I'd be grateful.......; It would be better/ best if ....'
Reported speech: - He told the kid to get down now.
- She asked us not to touch it.
In this case, you start with the subject who said those imperative words and use 'tell/told' for strong instruction and use 'ask' for the mild one.
